Untitled (First Abstract Watercolor)

1913

Watercolor and Indian ink and pencil on paper

19.5 × 25.5" (49.6 × 64.8 cm)

Paris, Centre Georges Pompidou

This work is widely regarded by many art historians as the first purely abstract painting in the history of modern art. Although the work itself bears the date 1910, scholars, comparing its execution with other works from the same year, generally agree that it in fact belongs to 1913.
