Deep Brown (Tiefes Braun)

1924

Oil on canvas

32.8 × 28.6" (83.3 × 72.7 cm)

Tiefes Braun explores the relationship between simple geometric shapes and their colors in all their diverse interactions. The predominance of diagonals and angular geometric shapes is apparently inspired by the aesthetics of constructivism, in the atmosphere of which the artist was immersed during his stay in Russia in 1914-1921. Rounded and "natural" shapes can remind of the artist's early lyrical works. As for color, Kandinsky has always had a special relationship with him. See how, moving from shade to shade, he achieves color dynamics or, by superimposing one color on another, creates a depth effect.

In 1922, at the invitation of Walter Gropius, the artist joined the famous Bauhaus school. Among the free and talented designers, architects, artists, and engineers exploring and developing innovative practices, Kandinsky felt like he belonged. Communication with students and teachers fueled his creative energy, encouraging him to invent and create new things.
