1915
- Due to a shortage of funds, working in oil is no longer possible; Kandinsky therefore works mainly in watercolor, ink on paper, engravings, and reverse glass painting (Hinterglasmalerei). In some works, there is a return to figuration.
- In a letter to Münter, he remarks that working in watercolor, almost like a jeweler's craft, demands great precision: "They prepare me for the large paintings which are slowly taking shape in my soul. I would like to make a large painting with enormous depth and achieve an effect of great distance with subtle means which one discovers only by coming close to the canvas ..."
- In Moscow, he attempts to re-establish himself in the local art scene, but his abstract work finds little understanding. Nevertheless, Composition VII is successfully exhibited.
