- A heavy blow for the family — his and Nina's only son dies before reaching the age of three.
- Continues administrative and organizational cultural work. Together with V. F. Stepanova, A. M. Rodchenko, and others, establishes the Institute of Artistic Culture (INkhUK) in Moscow and becomes head of its Monumental Art Section. From June, appointed honorary professor at Moscow University. Prepares for the establishment of the Russian Academy of Artistic Sciences (RAKhN).
- Paints Red Oval and White Line, in which elements of geometric abstraction begin to appear.
- Continues teaching art theory, encountering increasing pressure and criticism.
