Improvisations
The series of works under the unifying title "Improvisations" dates mainly to the years 1909–1914. Visually, they develop the ideas of abstraction and, as Kandinsky himself wrote, "a largely unconscious, spontaneous expression of inner character"—that is, the non-material essence. These works are analogous to musical improvisations, emphasizing the spontaneous, intuitive, and unconscious while approaching the abstract purity of music itself.
