- Completes his first major theoretical work, Concerning the Spiritual in Art. It reflects on the psychology of color, the harmonic resonance of forms, and above all, the search for an "inner necessity" rooted in the spiritual impulse.
- In late January, finishes the first work in the Composition series. Composition I is sent to exhibitions in London and Odessa, and in December is shown at the 2nd International Art Exhibition at the Izdebsky Salon in Odessa. The first three Compositions have not survived; Composition IV is dated 1911.
- Composition V is rejected by the NKVM jury as too radical. In response to the criticism and incomprehension of his colleagues, distances himself together with Franz Marc from the group; both begin work on an almanac that would later become known as The Blue Rider.
- Divorce from his first wife, Anna Chemyakina.
