- Resigns from the presidency of the NKVM in January, though remains a regular member of the association.
- Founding of the Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group. In addition to Kandinsky and Franz Marc, the group comprises August Macke, Marianne von Werefkin, Alexej von Jawlensky, Paul Klee, the Burliuk brothers, Gabriele Münter, and others. The first Der Blaue Reiter exhibition, showing 43 works by 14 artists, takes place at the Thannhauser Gallery in Munich. The rider image now comes to symbolize the group's struggle against traditional aesthetic values.
- Composition IV and Composition V are completed.
- Publication of Concerning the Spiritual in Art.
- Attends a concert of atonal music by Arnold Schoenberg, which leaves a profound impression and inspires new synesthetic ideas about the relationship between color and sound.
- Writes two key essays for the Der Blaue Reiter almanac: "On the Question of Form" and "On Stage Composition."
