- Actively engages in the construction of a "new culture." Appointed professor at the Moscow Academy of Fine Arts. Works in the IZO department of Narkompros (the People's Commissariat for Education). Colleagues at IZO include Vladimir Tatlin, Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Rodchenko, Olga Rozanova, and others.
- Participates in the development of the Free Art Studios (Svomas) program. In December 1918, the first issue of the journal Art of the Commune (Iskusstvo kommuny) is published by the IZO department of Narkompros. Kandinsky becomes one of its contributors.
- Publication of the book Rückblicke (Steps / Retrospectives).
- The heavy load of organizational work, combined with the everyday hardships of the post-revolutionary years, leaves little time for creative work — during this period, Kandinsky produces few new artworks.
- Also engages in teaching, basing his approach on his own theory, outlined in particular in Concerning the Spiritual in Art.
