Impression III (Concert)

1911

Oil on canvas

30.5 × 39.4" (77.5 × 100.0 cm)

Munich, The Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus

This painting does not depict any particular concert but rather shows the artist's overall impression of public piano performances. This is a very dynamic work, reflecting the very definition of an "impression"—one of the categories of painting that Kandinsky himself defined (along with improvisations and compositions). A massive black spot on the piano pours out a yellow color—it fills the surrounding space and envelops the listeners who are reaching toward its source.
