Dominant Curve
1936
Biomorphic abstraction
Oil on canvas
50.9 × 76.5" (129.3 × 194.3 cm)
New York, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
In this work, Kandinsky, who was passionate about botany and biology, introduced biomorphic elements resembling microorganisms to the canvas. For example, there is a pinkish embryonic form in the upper right, and a dark rectangular patch in the upper left corner with shapes resembling marine organisms. Elsewhere, a red spot appears on the right, closer to the center. However, the canvas also features strict geometric shapes—circles, lines, and even steps. This combination gives the work a sense of mystery and effectively removes it from the category of the merely decorative.
