The painting still retains a connection to reality: within the swirl of colors and lines, one can make out tilting buildings, a crowd of people, and a smoking cannon on wheels. In a letter to the American collector Arthur Jerome Eddy, Kandinsky explained: "the presence of the cannons in the picture could probably be explained by the constant war talk that has been going on throughout the year."
